President Xi Jinping has urged China - the world’s second biggest wast producer after the United States - to sort rubbish better.
China generated 210 million tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) in 2017, 48 million tonnes less than the United States, according to the world Bank’s What a Waste Database. China is engaged to develop its economy fast and have neglected the environment in the last several decades. Now it is time for China to get down to the environmental problem and rubbish disposal.
From 1st July, Shanghai became the first leading city to trial the rubbish sorting. It became a much-discussed topic among Shanghainese people. A hashtag meaning “Shanghai residents almost driven crazy by garbage classification” was one of the most popular on China’s Twitter-like Weibo platfrom.
Household waste in the city is now required to be sorted into four categories: wet garbage (household food), dry garbage (residual waste), recyclable waste and hazardous waste.General rubbish bins that had previously taken all types of household waste were removed from buildings. Instead, residents were told to visit designated trash collection stations to dispose of different types of waste during designated periods of the day.
By the end of 2020, the first 46 key cities to basically put in place waste classification and treatment systems; Other prefecture-level cities have achieved full coverage of household waste classification by public institutions, and at least one street has been basically built into a demonstration zone of household waste classification.
By 2022, at least one district of cities at all levels will be fully covered by household garbage classification, and at least one street in other districts will be basically built into a demonstration zone of household garbage classification.
By 2025, cities at the prefecture-level and above should basically have their own waste sorting and treatment systems in place.

Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Chongqing, Shijiazhuang, Handan, Taiyuan, Hohhot, Shenyang, Dalian, Changchun, Harbin, Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Hefei, tongling, fuzhou, xiamen, nanchang, yichun, zhengzhou, jinan, taian, Qingdao, wuhan, Yichang, Changsha, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanning, Haikou, Chengdu, Guangyuan, Deyang, Guiyang, Kunming, Lhasa, Zigaze, Xi 'an, Xianyang, Lanzhou, Xining, Yinchuan, Urumqi.
